Start with property management
In a Toronto condo, the dryer and flexible connector may belong to the unit owner while part of the exhaust system is treated as a common element. The division varies by building documents and layout. Ask management before arranging work, especially if the vent terminates on an exterior wall, balcony, roof or shared shaft.
Condo quote checklist
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Unit and laundry layout | A stacked unit in a closet may require different access than a freestanding appliance. |
| Vent responsibility | The corporation may control common ductwork or schedule building-wide cleaning. |
| Exterior termination | Balcony, wall, roof or shared-shaft routes require different planning. |
| Proof of insurance | Management may require a certificate before allowing a provider onsite. |
| Elevator and parking | Service bookings or loading access can affect timing and cost. |
| Booster fan | Long routes may use a fan that needs to be identified and handled correctly. |
What should the provider inspect?
Ask how much of the route they can access and how airflow or a restriction will be assessed. The visible hose behind the dryer is only one part of the system. A useful scope should distinguish cleaning from a damaged connector, disconnected duct, unsuitable material or fan problem.
Before-and-after documentation
Photos, airflow readings or a written summary can help the owner and property manager understand what was accessed and what remains outside the unit. Ask what documentation is standard before booking.
How often do condo vents need cleaning?
Natural Resources Canada advises inspecting and cleaning the exhaust duct and outside vent at least once a year. A condo corporation may require a different interval based on its system and fire-safety program. High usage, long runs and repeated performance symptoms can also justify earlier assessment.
When to stop using the dryer
If you smell burning, see smoke or suspect an immediate hazard, stop the appliance. If there is fire or immediate danger, leave the area and call 911. Do not wait for an online quote response.
